I’ve just experienced one of the most interesting nights of my life here in Israel. Yesterday the IDF killed at least 12 Gaza-based terrorists, and in response Hamas shot more than 35 rockets at Israel. Beersheva is located quite south and it is in range of these rockets. Last night just before 11, as I was going to sleep, the siren went off the first time.

At 1am it went off again.

At 3am the third time.

At 7:15am I woke up to it.

Four times. Yep, folks, this is the real Israel. The rocket that hit at 3am exploded somewhere close, and as I was standing in the stairway of the apartment building I could hear windows shaking, car alarms going off, and once the siren stopped just about every dog in Beersheva was barking.

Fortunately Israel has the world’s best defense system. As I told my roommate today, who called to check in if I was okay: “I’d be way more scared if a siren went off in Finland.” The IDF has something called the “Iron Dome”. It’s a radar system that will detect short range rockets, estimate the place they’ll hit, and if causing a threat, it will shoot out an interceptor missile to destroy the rocket before it hits. Last night as I was standing in the stairway I witnessed two of the interceptor missile launched to destroy the rocket. It was the 3am rocket that exploded close to where I was.

Seriously, all the things this country will teach a girl…

Did you know that the bathroom is not the safest room in the house? Because of the tiles. If a rocket hits the building, those tiles will turn into razor sharp knives. Due to the design of buildings, the stairway is the safest place to be if there is no bomb shelter.

Did you know that between the years 2000 and 2008 more than 4,000 rockets and 4,000 artillery bombs where shot from Gaza to the south of Israel? Did you know that nearly 1,000,000 Israelis living in the south are within rocket range?

I wish you a good Saturday, and consider yourself lucky if you live in a land of peace.
